Older is Better

Do you have a coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Yes I have found old coins in my change and new foreign coins but these truly older coins are nearly impossible to find unless you buy them or dig them up while metal detecting.

From top to bottom left then bottom right; 2004 Canadian penny, 1907 US penny, 1914D dime, 1854 quarter, and 1914S dime.

Here are the stats...
Type/Country: 1 Cent/Canada
Year: 2004
Mintage: 643,317,000
Metal: Copper plated zinc
Value: $0.10 in MS-60

Type/Country: 1 Cent/United States of America
Year: 1907
Mintage: 108,137,143
Metal: 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc
Value: $2.00 in G-4(good) although this one has some PVC damage

Type/Country: 10 Cents/United States of America
Year: 1914D
Mintage: 11,908,000
Metal: 90% silver, 10% copper
Value: $2.75 in G-4

Type/Country: 25 Cents/United States of America
Year: 1854
Mintage: 12,380,000
Metal: 90% silver, 10% copper
Value: $35.00 in F-12(fine) the word LIBERTY is complete but weak.

Type/Country: 10 Cents/United States of America
Year: 1914S
Mintage: 2,100,000
Metal: 90% silver, 10% copper
Value: $3.00 in G-4

As you can tell even worn and dirty older coins have more value while the newer ones are not worth as much initially. Granted 50 years from now maybe that Canadian will be a collectors item it is also a safe bet that the older US coins will still retain a premium value.

Still none of these will pay your rent.

Do you have a coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

13 intwined circles with the following states written in them: n. hamps, massch., connect., r. island, n. york, n. jersey, pennsyl., delaware, maryland, virginia, n. carolina, s. carolina, & georgia...in that order from top 2 back around. then in the center of the coin it says american congress around the motto "we are one". continental curency (Instead of having 2 r's in currency it only has one), fugio, then the motto is "mind your business"

No problem.

What you describe is a 1776 Continental Currency they were some sort of dollar substitute.

There are a few varieties and metals. They were made in pewter, silver, and brass.

Pewter is the most common while silver is very rare.

In good condition and pewter it's about $7,000.00. If silver it's about $200,000.00.

Now that said it is one of the most counterfeited/replicated coins in the U.S. many copies are sold as souvenirs. It is strongly advised to get it authenticated by a professional who is accredited.

Before submitting it take good pictures because some experts can tell a copy just from pictures.

Anonymous said...

who would i send the pictures to?
i looked it up and alot of people said that it would say "copy" somewhere on it and there is no "copy" anywhere on it.i believe mine may be pewter b/c when i drop it, it doesnt ding..it makes a faint ring. but a very dull one at that. so if you know an expert could you give me the link..plz!!..thanx alot...youre the best!

If it was a counterfeit it would not say "copy" that would be the scam.

Try posting the pictures on a forum like the PCGS forum there you can get many opinions and from there you decide whether or not to submit it for grading.

About $3.80 in fine mostly for the silver content.
If it is very-fine about $20.00 and the higher the grade the more it's worth since they are hard to find in high grades.

Not enough information.

I would need to know the front design, words, value.
Then the same for the reverse.

All coins have a value like 50 Cents or $5 dollars so that would be important to mention.
If no denomination is on then it is a medal.

This is a Mexican coin 50 Pesos. The eagle with snake is the national arms of Mexico. The Aztec myth-god is Coyolxauhqui.

Here are the stats...
Type/Country: 50 Pesos / Mexico
Year: 1982
Mintage: 222,890,000
Metal: Copper-nickel
Value: $2.50 in Extra-Fine

If when is was made into a necklace the coin was unharmed them the value is about the same, if the coin is drilled or attached to something then it is only worth metal value about $0.25 or less.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post a request for information on a coin, but I recently found a Neiman Marcus Christmas Gift Coin that appears to be pretty old. Would this have any value as a collectible? It says "Christmas Neiman Marcus" and has an old fashioned profile of Santa on one side, and "One Gift Dollar" with a very large "1" on the other. It has the weight and feel of a real coin and is about the same size as regular half dollar or dollar coin- it actually took us a while to figure out that it wasn't a Kennedy half dollar.

Thanks!! Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I've seen these before it should have a serial number also under the large 1.
I don't recall when it was from maybe 1975 but it has more of a holiday and Neiman Marcus collector value.

About $10.00 for this token if in almost-uncirculated shiny condition.

It is listed in a token catalogue but I forgot which one. Sorry I can not pin down the origin but I think it was a southern promotion. Maybe emailing Neiman Marcus would help with history. About 50,000 were made so they are common, popping up on eBay every so often.

Thanks for the last clarification. My father and I have a nice shiny penny that has a smooth clump of "copper" covering the bottom right ~15% of the face of the penny. All you can see is 19 then the rest of the date is covered. The defect is shiny and rises up about an additional half thickness of a penny. Ever seen anything like this? I'm guessing this penny is no older than 1970 at best. Any value in this? Thanks!

This is a die break error, since it covers the date it has much less value. It might be $2.00.

Hey there I seen something about Canadian coins being worth 2 to 3 times face value? I live in the US and I have a bunch of Canadian coins and for some reason not even the banks will take the coins? Do you think it would be better to just try to sell them on Ebay or something? I do not know how to get US money for them since no place will take them.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Man said...

Canadian coins being worth 2 to 3 times face value?
Partially true since the metal value has soared recently the average Canadian coin has more metal value than face value. 6 months ago it would have been more for the nickels and cents but not so much now.

Take a 1968 Canadian dime is worth about $0.35 for silver alone.
Unless near perfect most non-silver coins won't sell for much because the economy is bad and most dealers aren't buying.
A year ago you could unload these but now not even eBay would work, but if your really out to get rid of them make a list of them, make sure none are silver or errors or varieties and then sell them all at once starting at a low price on eBay and maybe you'll get a few bucks.

3 - 1864- 1964 Canadian 1 dollar
4 - 1097, 1913 & 1921 penny England

My collection includes coins from the following countries; Spain, US, Bermuda, Mexico, Deutchland, Morocco, Costa Rica, Barbados, Belgium, Denmark, Nederland, France, Jamaica, Colubia, Bahama, Norway, Panama, Portugal, England and Canada.
Is there a website that can tell me what the rarest or most sought after coins are for the world?

1921 U.S. Dollar
about $20.00 for a Morgan
about $20.00 for a Peace

1916 Canadian .10 cent about $1.25
1864- 1964 Canadian 1 dollar about $8.00

penny England
1907 about $1.25
1913 about $0.80
1921 about $0.80

There is no website to show exactly what you need but the book 2009 Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000 is the best reference.
There is a .pdf version and older editions work well and are cheaper.

Hi, I was wondering what your thoughts would be on this. I have 16 consecutively numbered dollar bills, series 1935 D. Any idea what you think the value is? They are mint and crisp. You can see two bills I just put on a shutterfly page for you to view. The link is http://kleerwite.shutterfly.com/
You should see a few of the pics in the middle of that page. Thanks for your help. Mike

16 consecutively numbered dollar bills, series 1935 D

Great pictures.
These are 1935-E not D.
In that condition about $15.00 each maybe a little more. They are common and often found in gem crisp at $25 each.

Mike and JB from wordrampage.com said...

Thanks for the info.

Sorry about that, I meant to say that my 16 consecutively numbered 1935 D LOOKED as good as those. I put the two 1935 E bills on Ebay. Thats why I had the the pictures online. I didn't want to stick my ebay link on here because, I didn't want it to look like spam, so I used shutterfly.

In addition to the value for the 1935 D's, would there be a premium on these if they were consecutively numbered?

Thanks again. I like your blog.

Mike

Man said...

1935 D's, would there be a premium on these if they were consecutively numbered?

The thing with 1935-D is that depending on serial number it would be from $12.00 to $6,000.00 each.

There are 19 varieties for the 1935-D because of WIDE and NARROW difference on the back.

Feel free to drop the eBay link.

As for consecutive notes yes they bring up the value but just a little unless it is the rare variety.

If you want just leave the first and last letter of the serial number.
EX: S-E or *-A or A-F

Mike and JB from wordrampage.com said...

Hi, the first and last letter are L-F.

1935-D first and last letter are L-F

These are among the most common so about $12.00.

In case you come across more 1935-D
U-E are about $2,000.00 in very-fine.
*-C are about $250.00 in very-fine.
M-G with a back number of 5015 or lower are about $50.00 in very-fine.

All others vary from $50 or less in very-fine.

I'm not sure what happened to my post. So, if you get it somewhere else in your blog, sorry. But, I was wondering if you could give me some insight into one other thing. I have about 12 one dollar bills that are signed by either the Treasurer and / or the Treasury Secretary. I have put the scans up again for you on my shutterfly page. The link is

http://kleerwite.shutterfly.com/.

Any thoughts about these? I really do appreciate your help. I'm much more knowledgeable about coins, but, want to get more knowledgeable about currency.

Thanks again,
Mike

Man said...

t 12 one dollar bills that are signed by either the Treasurer and / or the Treasury Secretary.

This would be both of an autograph collectible and currency.
A few of the older collectors do not like these Courtesy Autographs but as the original signers grow old and die they are now becoming more sought after and more faked.

So if graded and verified the might add about 10% above each notes value.
Most of your notes look CU a grade of 64/70 and are about $10.00 so at the end it's about $11.00 but as you know the better the note the more you can get.

All that said I've seen some selling for $80 and one older collector selling them at $5 each.

Google: Currency by Lew
he sells autograph notes and is open to email questions.(Caution: Prices may be a bit high)

The obverse side seems to be in XF condition. Is this coin of any value? And, if so, what would you estimate as its value? Thanks.

If this was a clip error it would be less than $100.00 but with the blank back it suggests some kind of damage with no extra value.
It must be seen in hand by an expert because it may be a genuine error that occurs when 2 coins get smashed together or it was damaged by a jeweler.

After reading all your comments, I wont ask about all the others but if you could give me any suggestions on what to look for as I go through them, it would be greatly apprieciated.

This is a $1 Silver Eagle it's about $20.00.

About $1.00

If you want maybe invest in a U.S. Coin Red Book most values over the few years have not changed much so an older book is fine.
Maybe even a Coin magazine would help find values.
Online Google pcgs price guide
they're getting better but for low quality coins they lack info.

Man said...

1985 penny that appears to be pewter
None were made, this kind of error is not possible.

It might be a an un-coated cent with the zinc core showing through. These errors are worth about $20.

If this is an off-metal coin it maybe worth more but it must be weighed or shown to an expert in person.

Hi, I was looking through some of my things and found two 1932 - S Quarters that I bought in an auction years ago from McKee Coins. One of the coins they have listed as 1932 S/S, or as I recall S over S. I haven't been able to find a double strike from this year. Are you aware of these? Any idea how much premium. McKee graded it an AU-50. The other was an EF-40 1932 S.

Thanks,
Mike

Quarters

1932 S/S AU-50 never seen a true doubling but let's assume it is about $1,000.00 but it must be verified by a grading company.

The few doubling I've heard of were all fake or machine double which is not worth anything extra($320.00).

1932 S EF-40 about $300.00

On the back is a picture of a hand with "L.500" on the outside.
2.A parking token that looks like it has a model t car on both sides.
3.8 Mexican dollars 1985
4.A "Federal Republic of Nigeria coin. It says "kobo" on the back of it.

It's 500 lire from Italy but without a year I can't help much.

2.A parking token that looks like it has a model t car on both sides.
This is a local token with no extra value.

3.8 Mexican dollars 1985If you mean $1 dollar it's about $0.10 each. There is no such thing as a $8 dollar coin.

4.A "Federal Republic of Nigeria coin. It says "kobo" on the back of it.
Again without a year it's hard to assess value or type.

Me again. the Italian coin is 1978
and the nigerian coin is 1974.
I have one question. Is the cener of the italian coin real gold?

Man said...

Italian coin is 1978
As far as I know 1978 did have any Italian 500 lire, maybe more description. Sorry.

nigerian coin is 1974.
About $0.25

Anonymous said...

my bad, the italian coin is 1998 and the center on both sides has some sort of smaller gold coin in the middle

Man said...

the italian coin is 1998

Now it makes sense.
It's about $2.00.
The ring is not gold.
The center is Bronzital a special alloy of bronze composed of copper and aluminum, occasionally nickel.
The ring is acmontial a Stainless Steel alloy consisting mostly of Iron, with 0.14% Carbon, 17.5-19% Chrome, 0.50% Magnesium, 1.15% Silicium, 0.03% Sulfur, and 0.03% Phosphorus by weight.

One more question, I read somewhere that you can trade lire in somewhere and get alot for it. I think it might be 1,000 or 2,000 US dollars for 500 lire. Is this true? Or is this a hoax?

Man said...

No. This is not true.
Lire is an obsolete currency and can no longer be turned in for US dollars.
Even if possible Lire were worth
10 Lire = $0.01 dollars at most.

Some gold Lire marked 50,000 Lire were made and worth their weight in gold about $500.

Sounds like someone altered the coin so no extra value.
Maybe if you can use a free photo site to upload the image I can better identify it.
But it's not necessary because the coin is so flat.

This is from Great Britain it is fairly common with 20,935,000 made but when the British switched to the decimal system it was slowly phased out by 1984.

It's about $0.25.

Thank you for the fast response and information. I also noticed a mark in front of the f in half. I can't make anything but looks like it was hit. Oh yes it is the 1928 George V half penny.

I have some coins that may be rare, but I have been trouble finding their values over the internet. Also, some of them (like the Sacajaweas and Eisenhowers) are thought by some to be slightly valuable, and to others worthless. I hope you can clear things up! The coins I need price values for are listed below:

1. 1 1972-D eisenhower dollar (circulated)
2. 1 1977-D eisenhower dollar (circulated, but still in decent condition)
3. (a lot) of mexican un pesos dated 1957-1963 (circulated)
4. 1 1941 canadian penny- it says k.g. on the back (circulated)
5. 1943-P steel wheatback penny (circulated)
6. 6 2000-P sacajawea dollars (circulated and uncirculated)
7. 1976-P bicentennial half dollar- I found the letters SGH on the back with a magnifying glass, dont know if it means anything (uncirculated)

Thanks a lot!

Man said...

2. 1 1977-D eisenhower dollar (circulated, but still in decent condition)

3. (a lot) of mexican un pesos dated 1957-1963 (circulated)
All are 10% silver
1957 guy facing left about $3.50
1957 guy facing right about $0.75
1958 about $0.75

4. 1 1941 canadian penny- it says k.g. on the back (circulated)
About $0.10

5. 1943-P steel wheatback penny (circulated)
About $0.30

6. 6 2000-P sacajawea dollars (circulated and uncirculated)
About $1.00 each regardless of condition

7. 1976-P bicentennial half dollar- I found the letters SGH on the back with a magnifying glass, dont know if it means anything (uncirculated)
About $0.50 the designers initials SGH means Seth G. Huntington,

Most these coins are common and only the scarce 1957 peso has the most value.
